My story
Originally, I come from the beautiful Co. Down, but felt called to the south of Ireland for many years before actually moving! I am very blessed to call Co. Cork my current home.
I am a self-taught Felt Artist, a lover of wool and art, but my journey here has not been very straightforward.
In 2019 during a career break, I did things I had always wanted to do but never had the time. Having always loved art and design at school, I took evening classes in photography, joined a choir, and took a painting class. I found a new interest in felt art inspired by the BBC’s Home Is Where The Art Is.
Enthralled by the creative felting process, I sourced felting kits and wool in various colours and began my journey by hand-felting paintings for family and friends which they treasured.
I found the creative outlet I had been looking for. The versatility of fibres allows me to “play” with a wide variety of materials and create something truly unique and special.
In a world where everything is fast…creating felt paintings is anything but! Felt making takes a lot of effort and patience.
The Felt Painting Process
- Planning.
- Colour palette selection.
- Carding the wool with hand carders.
- Laying the dry wool fibres out.Wet felting process.
- Time to dry.
- Fine details can be needle felted in.
- Free motion & hand embroidery can be added.
When working with wool, you need to be calm, not tense and flustered; this is very evident when pulling the fibres apart.
It allows for moments of reflection, gratitude and being present in the here and now.
